TEHRAN (IQNA) – The office of Iraq’s top Shia cleric Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani issued a statement on Istihlal (moonsighting to determine the beginning of a lunar Hijri month).

In the statement released on Sunday, the office said Istihlal will be performed on Friday evening, April 24, watania.net website reported.

It added that the moon is expected to be sighted on Friday and, therefore, Saturday will be the first day of the holy month of Ramadan.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting, prayer, reflection and community.

Some religious scholars rely on astronomical calculations to determine the beginning of lunar months while most of them believe visual sighting of the moon should be used in this case.
